Quick answer
Import the DRM-free EPUB with Kindle selected in Bookify. Bookify prepares an AZW3 or MOBI file for download in the Kindle browser. Automatic normally selects AZW3 for text EPUBs and may select MOBI for detected comics.
Understand input and output formats
The EPUB on your phone is the source file. With Kindle selected, Bookify prepares a compatible format during import.
| Import setting | Prepared format for an EPUB |
|---|---|
| Kindle, Automatic | Usually AZW3 for text; may use MOBI for detected comics |
| Kindle, AZW3 | AZW3 |
| Kindle, MOBI | MOBI |
MOBI and AZW3 offer different capabilities. Use a compatible AZW3 book if you want to embed a custom font.
Import the EPUB and check the result
- Open Settings → Reading Optimization in Bookify. Choose Kindle and leave Output Format on Automatic.
- Import the complete original EPUB from Files, cloud storage or another app.
- Wait for conversion, then check the title, cover and file format on the bookshelf.
- If needed, edit the cover or author using the book menu before transferring.
The output setting controls import processing. Changing it does not automatically reconvert books already on the bookshelf. Keep the original EPUB and import it again under the new setting when you need a different output format.
Download the prepared book onto Kindle
Connect the Kindle and iPhone to the same Wi-Fi. Open Transfer in Bookify and connect using QR pairing or the displayed local address. Download the prepared book in the Kindle browser, then open it from the Kindle library. See the illustrated iPhone transfer guide.
For a sample, choose EPUB on the Project Gutenberg page for Pride and Prejudice, using an edition you may download and use in your region.
Check the reading result
Open the text, navigate the table of contents and check a few chapters and images. A cover in Bookify, a cover embedded inside the file and a Kindle library thumbnail are separate parts of the workflow. After changing a cover, transfer the updated book and check the actual device.
Find the failing step
- Import fails: Check that the download is complete, DRM-free and not a saved webpage. Use the import checklist.
- The book is in Bookify but missing from the download page: Confirm that Kindle is selected and check the file format. Changing settings does not reconvert existing books.
- The page will not open or the download stops: Use connection troubleshooting.
- The book opens but layout or cover is wrong: Keep the original file and specific error details. You can optionally submit a problem book for investigation.
Questions You May Have
Does Kindle download the original EPUB?
In Bookify Kindle mode, the EPUB is converted to AZW3 or MOBI before transfer. The Kindle downloads the prepared file.
Can I just rename the extension to AZW3?
No. Renaming a file does not convert its internal structure. Import the original EPUB into Bookify.
Do I need Amazon to convert the file?
Bookify import conversion and local transfer do not require Amazon Send to Kindle. Choosing Amazon delivery instead uses its separate cloud processing workflow.
